Raiders and Trojans vie for the Regional title

The Rappahannock Raiders and Essex Trojans football teams survived and advanced to the class 1 Region A championship game at Essex High School on Saturday, November 30. This was the second time in the school’s history that the Raiders reached the title game; the last on was 1993. The Trojans were going for their third in a row. “We treated this like the next football game, we expected to be here and to play next week in the state semifinals” stated Head Coach William West. The Raiders were first on the scoreboard after a 7-yard touchdown pass from Kahlique ‘KJ’ Gaines Jr to Tyler West to go up (7-0) with 7:30 left in the first quarter. The teams traded turnovers with the Trojans Kae’naan Ball intercepting a pass and the Raiders forcing a fumble on their 5-yard line. Head Coach Todd Jones said, “They (Raiders) is a really good football team; they came out and executed well.” The home team got on the scoreboard with a Takeyo Day Jr one-yard run around the right end to make it (7-8) with the two-point conversion at the 9:31 mark of the second. The Essex recovered a Rappahannock fumble and converted it into points with a Takeyo Day Jr 14-yard run to go up (7-14) with 5:40 to go in the second. The visitors used the arm of their quarterback and the legs and hands of their receiver to tie the game (14-14) when Tyler West streaked down the sideline and ‘KJ’ Gaines Jr hit him for an 80-yard touchdown pass with 1:21 to go before half time. Both teams took their first possessions of the second half down the field and scored; the Trojans on Tahraun Hammond 15-yard run to make it (14-22) with 11:04 to play in the third quarter. The Raiders used the pass ‘KJ’ Gaines connected with Demetrius Parker from 46-yards out to tie the game (22-22) with 6:51 to go.
