The music was pumping, hearts were racing, and sweat was popping, sounds like a club, right? No, it was the YMCA’s Silver Sneaker class led by instructor, Mike Gall. Silver Sneakers is a national fitness program geared toward baby boomers and beyond. The classes are provided at no cost by over 60 health plans. Classes vary depending on the location, but they all are engaging and fun and designed for all abilities.
At 10 a.m., Monday through Friday the Richmond County YMCA offers its version of Silver Sneakers. The members in the class attend on a regular basis and after fifteen minutes of my observation, I can see why; it is pure joy in motion and the music makes the members forget that they are getting a full workout. Members’ shoulders, hips, arms moved rhythmically in sync. I did see some freestyle and extra movements to the music. Gall keeps the class moving and smiling with his shots of humor. The class, though geared for boomers, is a workout for any age. It is fun, fresh and great energy in and between members and the instructor. Silver Sneakers is serious fun.
