The Richmond County Board of Supervisors voted to support the recommendations of the Route 3 Northern Neck Improvement Study by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). They intend to incorporate the suggestions into the Richmond County Comprehensive Plan.
The study began in 2014 when VDOT met with the Northern Neck Planning Commission, County Administrators and several supervisors to determine ways to improve traffic flow along the highway. The focus on Route 3 is considered important because it and Route 360, are the two main roads in the Northern Neck, and Route 3 is the only road linking one end of the region to the other. Timely travel along the road is important to supporting existing businesses as well as attracting new ones.
The study showed that traffic in the Northern Neck is impacted by two different types of delays: daily delays from school buses, logging trucks, and farm equipment; and seasonal delays from tourists, beach traffic, towed boats, and recreational vehicles.
