Fones Cliff officially changed ownership to Virginia True Corporation on May 1, 2017; the property was bought for $12 million from Diatomite Corporation. Allan Applestein, a Miami entrepreneur and owner of Diatomite, purchased Fones Cliff in 1958. Robert C. Smith, PLC is listed as the registered agent of Virginia True Corporation, and has been the principal spokesperson and project lead for the proposed development of the golf course and resort on the 1000-acre site.
The Fones Cliff proposed development sits on 1000 acres of pristine forested cliffs, reaching 100 feet overlooking the Rappahannock River. To view the area one would travel Route 360 to route 624 to 622. The area originally zoned as agricultural was rezoned in November 2015 to mixed-use, which allows the development of the property for use as golf course, lodging, resort and other residential and commercial uses. The Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 in favor of the rezoning. Chairman F. Lee Sanders voted nay.
To date the current focus is on the development of the golf course; surveys, staking out tees, fairways and greens, are in the works.
