VHSL unveils football schedule

Posted on Thursday, July 18, 2013 at 11:59 pm

The Virginia High School League unveiled the 2013 Master Football Schedule this past week. Among the games lined up for the fall season, one stands out for Group A fans after last season’s finale.

In a rematch of the Group A Division 2 State Football Championship, the defending victors from Goochland will travel to Tappahannock and face the Essex Trojans on Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. This comes after the Bulldogs from Goochland defeated the undefeated Trojans 41-14. Goochland finished the year at 13-2.

Last year was a huge turn around for the Trojans learning a new system with their second coach in the past two seasons and a sophomore quarterback. Coach John Fulks and his staff led the Trojans Rappahannock-River-Conferenceto 14 straight games and a regular season district title before being humbled by the Bulldogs at the Salem City Stadium.

This will be the first year under the new six-alignment plan approved the VHSL Executive Committee moving Essex and Washington & Lee in the same classification, 1A, with other Northern Neck District Teams as Rappahannock, Northumberland, Lancaster and Colonial Beach. This was based on the student enrollment at the respective schools (450 or less). Last year the members of VHSL were under the three-alignment classification.

The Northern Neck teams will also combine with Rappahannock County to form the Rappahannock River Conference. Rappahannock County will be the only team to play seven regular season games, the rest have 10.

Colonial Beach, Northumberland and Washington & Lee will also kickoff their season on Aug. 30. Westmoreland County will have two home games with Colonial Beach hosting King & Queen at 7 p.m. and King George travelling to W&L for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

New head coach Brian Hahn, at Northumberland, will take the Indians on the road to Surry for a 7 p.m. season opener. The Lancaster Red Devils, under the direction of former assistant coach Damien Crissey, will open the season at home on Sept. 6 against King & Queen at 7 p.m. Rappahannock will travel on that same night to West Point for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

In a surprise for fans, Rappahannock and Washington & Lee will play a second game against one another following some expected schools not having football teams this season. On Sept. 20, Washington & Lee will travel to Rappahannock for a special non-district game called the Border Bowl with kick off beginning at 7 p.m.

District games will begin Oct. 11 with all game times at 7 p.m. Find the full master football schedule on the VHSL website at
