Trojans still in the hunt for state title

The Essex Boys Basketball was one of the five Northern Neck District Teams to advance to the Group A State Basketball quarterfinals this past weekend. But now they are the only team to advance to the semifinals.

Sterling Hammond and the Essex Trojans live to fight another day after defeating Dan River in the state quarterfinals.

On March 2 at the Salem Civic Center, Essex defeated Region B champion Dan River in the opening round of the state tournament, 52-49. Essex’s Keith Bundy led all scorers with 19 points to go along with three rebounds.

The Trojans will now advance to the semifinals against Radford on March 7 at 7 p.m.

Essex’s Alonzo Tompkins was the second leading scorer in the game with 15 points, eight rebounds, four assists and one block. Sterling Hammond and DJ Ashlock chipped in with six points each followed by Alex Balderson with four and Lawrence Hill with two points.

Dan River was led by Terrell Edmunds with 14 points.

Among the other Northern Neck District Teams, the Lancaster girls team was eliminated by Clarke County 45-41 in the Division 2 Tournament, the Colonial Beach girls team was dropped by Altavista 56-23 in Division 1, and the Northumberland Boys team was defeated by William Monroe 74-44 in the Division 2. In the day to follow and the Northumberland Girls Team fell to George Mason 68-35 in the Division 2 Tournament.

If Essex wins again, they will play in the finals on March 9 against the winner of  Gate City and William Monroe. Game begins at 5 p.m.
