A good vibe continued with the Essex Football Team and their followers on a cold evening last Friday following Thanksgiving Day. The Trojans now stand as one
of the top four teams vying for the Group 1A State Football Championship.
This accomplishment came after their 12th win this season. The victim was the Central Lunenburg Chargers as Essex eliminated them from the playoffs with a 31-6 victory in Tappahannock.
For the visiting Chargers, they were their own worst enemies as they coughed up the ball at critical moments of the game.
Central Head Coach Will Thomas said before coming into Friday’s game that his team needed to have a perfect game. That was not the case in his eyes following their loss in Tappahannock.
“They are a good team and they played hard,” Thomas said. “We just didn’t play perfect and we had to. We had to count on them making mistakes and they didn’t make them either.”
While the four turnovers made by Central displeased their fans, Essex was ecstatic as they scored once on one play and twice on the next Essex set of drives.
Essex will host Fort Chiswell on Dec. 7 in Tappahannock at 1 p.m.
Essex defenders D.J. Ashlock and Trey Jones each caught an interception in last Friday’s win. Ashlock earned a pick-six running the ball back for 90 yards in the third quarter.
