Richmond County Board of Supervisors presented the Rappahannock High School champion softball team with a resolution during the August 9 meeting. The Lady Raiders competed and won the State 1A Championship in Radford on June 9, defeating Auburn High School with a score of 5-1. The team’s overall record was an impressive 23-3.
The board noted that the team would be remembered for beating an undefeated team in the state championship game, but mostly for their ability to play as a team. Senior Meredith Slaw was named the Virginia High School League 1A Player of the Year. The Virginia High School Coaches Association and the Virginia High School League named Coach Ellen Gaines 1A Coach of the Year.
Coach Gaines, who has stated how proud she is of her team, thanked the Board of Supervisors “We would like to thank you for inviting us and for this resolution. We had a great time representing Richmond County.”
Members of the 2017-2018 softball team included Regan Allen, Rilee Baughan, Ella Campbell, Maeve Collins, Sarina Darby, Caroline Davenport, Savannah Goodman, Elizabeth Kellum, Trynity Lee, Anna Lewis, Grace Minor, Elizabeth Norris, Brooke Passagaluppi, Ashley Perrey, Meredith Slaw, Karli Taylor, and Julia Whelan along with Coach Ellen Gaines, Patty Ptucha, and Shawn Collins.
