“I haven’t had a mother in 31 years, and I decided that some of the women in the Orchard may not get visitors, so I thought this was the best place to be,” said Marquette Payne-Cox. Cox is a member the Nubian Hatters Chapter (NHC) of the international Red Hat Society (RHS). Each month a member is responsible for the planning of an activity or hoot, as they call it.
Cox, not only coordinated the luncheon, but also prepared the food. The NHC, donned in their signature red hats and purple dresses celebrated with and honored the residents of the Orchard, Warsaw, VA with an amazing lunch and lighthearted fellowship, May 9 in acknowledgement of Mother’s Day. While there they celebrated Bernice Smith, whose birthday is in the month of May. In the tradition of the RHS, members play the song Happy Birthday on a Kazoo; the birthday women wear opposite colors—purple hats and red attire.
