As the soccer season winds down, the teams from the Northern Neck District begin preparations for the district and state tournaments.

On May 6, the Northumberland girls squared off against King William in a non-district matchup.

The Essex girls took on Christchurch May 10 in another non-district game.  The lady Trojans played the first half flat and allowed the physical play of Christchurch to dictate the flow of the game.

Essex played the second half on a little more even footing, but in the end lost 3-0.   They learned quite a bit from the experience and hope to grow from it as they prepare for three games this week

Rappahannock’s Brock Belfield and the Raiders team prepare for the final week of the regular season.

against King William May 13, at home against Washington & Lee May 15, and again at home May 17 against Lancaster to close the regular season.

The Washington & Lee girls rebounded from last week’s 3-1 loss against Northampton with a 4-1 victory against Lancaster.

Lizett Barajas led the way with two goals.  Megan Daiger had a goal and two assists, Lidia Cardenas had a goal, Megan Smith added an assist, and Brittany Payne stopped 5 Lancaster shots on goal.

Smith and Tamara Tate controlled the center of the field, opening up the wings for through balls leading to the W&L scores.  The Eagles take their 4-3-1 (2-0-1 in the district) record to Essex May 15 and then square off with Northumberland at home for Senior Night May 17.

The Rappahannock boys ended the week on a good note, beating Northumberland 7-0.  Jarrett Gordon recorded three saves to preserve the shutout.

Michael Gaines led Rappahannock with three goals.  Aaron Rock had a goal and three assists. The Raiders also got goals from LaQuan Brown, Brandon Vidra, and Brandon Harcum and assists from Fabian Lopez, Hector Vargas, and Ernesto Cordova.

Rappahannock, though they played a spirited first half, wasn’t as successful in the game at Washington & Lee May 6, losing 7-1.

Trailing 2-0, on goals by Juan “Chino” Ochoa (both assisted by Alex Lane), late in the first half, Rock fought off two defenders before centering to Gaines who put it past Eagle goalie Ryan Taylor.  Rappahannock goalie Jarret Gordon played huge in the first half, stopping numerous W&L runs.

In the second half, the Eagle flood gates opened as W&L got two more goals from Chino, one from Luis Chipres, one from Pope Antunez, and one from Nick Brown off a late corner kick from Jose Chipres.

The Eagles took their scoring machine on the road to Lancaster May 10.  Chino started the scoring 15 seconds into the game and never looked back as he ultimately added four more.

Brian Moody scored for Lancaster, but the five goals from Chino, one from Antunez and Max Comerford with assists from Juan Izaguirre (2) and Lane were too much for Lancaster to overcome.

Washington & Lee closes out the season at home against Essex May 13 and at home for Senior Night against Northumberland May 17.
