2003 Inductees

Ken Blackley


Legendary high school coach for over 36 years, Blackley has amassed an amazing 399-191 record that includes 12 district championships, two regional championships and a state championship in 1993. He has been named coach of the year 11 times at different levels including Regional Coach of the Year that included four state awards, and was nominated for National Baseball Coach of the Year 1997.

He also has a 279-216 record in basketball and was named State Coach of the Year in 1981. In addition he has a five-year record of 76-22 as girls’ basketball coach.



Laverne Gould Carlson

Outboard Power Boat Racing

In almost an exclusive sport for men and racing against some of the top professional men, Carlson made headlines and actually received a trophy for being the only female racer. She was also awarded the Outstanding Sportsmanship Award for the year 1956.

In addition she was an expert bowler, managed the Lady Blue Devils Softball Team, was the first lady to bag a six point buck in Lancaster County and, at age 68, took up Drag Racing Street Rods.



Wardell Carter

Outstanding athlete in many sports, Carter starred in baseball, first at Brookvale High School, then at Lancaster High School where he batted .500 his senior year.

He was the number one seed at MVP for Rappahannock Community College, South Campus Tennis Team in 1987 and 1988.

Coaching several different sports at the middle and high school levels, he won the regional baseball championship at Northumberland in 1996. He served as Lancaster County Director of Parks and Recreation from 1989 to 1993. A member of many volunteer groups he also works with Special Olympics.
