School board faces budget decrease

Posted on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at 11:37 am

The monthly Richmond County School Board (Board) meeting was held Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at 5 p.m in the high school auditorium. Renee Edwards, representing the teachers, thanked the Board for their continued support and invited the members and those in attendance to the upcoming Kindergarten play/musical, Thursday, May 4 at 6:30 p.m in the high school auditorium.
Under old business, Dr. Greg Smith, Superintendent presented the proposed policy changes as requested by the Virginia School Board Association (VSBA). A regulation was added to Policy EF-BR, free and reduced price food services. Smith reminded the Board that the operation of the food program is self-sustaining. The Food and Drug Administration now requires all schools to develop policies and practices regarding the school nutrition program as well as the charge for payment policies. Through extensive research it was discovered that existing policies varied greatly, so school administration and central office staff developed a new policy for the school system. In an effort to keep debt to a minimum the school system has instituted a system to notify parents and guardians of negative, low or insufficient account balances. Smith noted that under the policy, “no student is denied a meal.” They are not provided a substitute meal; students will be provided a reimbursable meal.
