Richmond County, VA Public Schools’ grading scale now rests in people’s hands

Richmond County schools are seeking public input on whether the grading scale should change.
Last Wednesday, Assistant Superintendent Sarah Schmidt reported the results of the grading procedure committee’s first meeting to the Richmond County School Board.
In the meeting, committee members  wrote down what they perceived were the strengths and weaknesses of the school division’s current practices according to Schmidt.
“A lot of us [are] on the same page about a lot of issues, and not on the same page about other issues, which is not a surprise,” she said.
Schmidt said that the committee, comprised of school officials and parents, decided to develop a survey that would be taken by parents, staff members, teachers and students regarding their stances on grading policies. The results will be discussed at their next meeting in January, she added.
Schmidt said everyone on the committee agreed they needed to revisit the grading scale and “offer a recommendation that’s probably different from what we have now.”
