On Saturday, VCU’s Center for Family Involvement hosted the Northern Neck Family Resource Fair at Kilmarnock Town Centre Park. The free networking event was designed for families that have children with disabilities.
Thirty-five families attended before rain cut the event short. There were 15 booths providing information about resources for people with special needs, and many parents to were introduced to services that they either didn’t know existed or didn’t know were available locally.
“A lot parents I talked to didn’t know that they can reach out directly to us,” said Henry Millward, director of the Office of Specialized Education Facilities and Family Engagement at the Virginia Department of Education.
“A parent said, ‘you mean to tell me I can get help if I think my child has special needs.’ I said yes but it was like a thump in my chest,” said Millward. “But I learned a long time ago, parents don’t know what they don’t know about special ed. And that’s what this is all about—educating families, he said.
