Did you get to go fishing this weekend? Saturday was a great day to go, but it was a little breezy. It never did get as warm as I was hoping, but still a beautiful day to be fishing. The arrival of artic air is putting a hurting on my springtime fishing. I can’t wait for the topwater action to begin.
Dustin Bailey and his little brother, Ben Shepherd went fishing down at Naylor’s Thursday evening for an early birthday fishing trip. Happy birthday Dustin. Using mud shad and night crawlers they had an exciting time. They caught many catfish over 17 inches with 4 3 pounders and the biggest being a 25 inch 5 pounder. Way to go Dustin and Ben.
Saturday I managed to slide over to Wilna Pond to do a little fishing. I finally found some bass, but not the big one I was looking for, but I did find a 2 ½ pound bass that was hitting something near the surface. Sorry, but anything topwater gets the heart beating faster. I threw out one lure, nothing. I grabbed a second pole and threw back to the same spot, a few cranks on the reel, and bam! I got a great fight on a light spinning reel set up. Just don’t tell my daughter I was using her fishing pole.
My little brother, Bill Callis came down to join me and we went back out and did some fishing. Found some more small ones on the windblown banks. He wasn’t having great success, so he switched back to a basic spinnerbait with a chartreuse skirt. It wasn’t long before he got hung on a log, well; he thought it was until it started to swim away. I don’t know who was more excited when we finally caught a glimpse of what he had hooked. A sweet 8.5 pound bass that put up a great fight was his log. After getting a measurement of its length and girth, and weighing it, we turned her loose, watching as she swam back down into cover.
I had my butt whooped and I am not afraid to admit it. But, just being out on the water with my brother was the best part of the whole day. We laughed so hard. We didn’t catch a ton of fish, but we caught a lot of memories. Memories that will last a lifetime. Of course we can’t wait for the next adventure to happen. And I am planning my big fish catch to beat him.
Did you know that just off the Northern Neck….
