On Tuesday, the Northern Neck News became aware of a pending amendment to existing Virginia Code. House Bill No. 513, patroned by Del. Rick Morris (the same Delegate who attempted last year to change the appointed school board system) reads as follows:
Referred to Committee on Counties, Cities and Towns
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That the Code of Virginia is amended by adding a section numbered 15.2-1411.1 as follows:
§ 15.2-1411.1. Removal of certain appointees.
Any appointee of a local governing body to a local board, committee, or commission, whether pursuant to § 15.2-1411 or any other provision of the Code, shall serve at the pleasure of the local governing body and may be removed at any time, notwithstanding the initial term of appointment or any other provision of general law to the contrary.
In an interview with The Northern Neck News on Thursday, 99th Dist. Del. Margaret Ransone (R-VA) said she was “shocked” by the legislation and that although Patron Del. Morris refused to back down, she would fight the bill, which is expected to be heard on the floor on Monday, Jan. 13.
“We caught this head on and we are on top of it,” Ransone said, adding that she would fight to ensure that her constituents’ voices were heard.
