The weather is getting a bit cooler around the Northern Neck for high school
sports spectators. But they shouldn’t be concerned too long because the winter sports season begins following Thanksgiving.
This will be the first year for winter high school teams entering into the new classification realignment, which was issued by the executive committee of the Virginia High School League. As a result Washington & Lee, Essex, Lancaster and Northumberland’s basketball teams will be joining some of last year’s schools with smaller enrollment sizes during the playoffs.
Last season, the four teams competed in the Group A Division 2 level as opposed to Rappahannock and Colonial Beach in Division 1.
No changes will occur for any of the wrestling teams.
This season also marks the first time all the teams will play at least one of their conference opponents before January.
On Dec. 7 at 12 p.m., the first Rivalry Tip-Off featuring the Varsity Boys & Girls Basketball Teams from the Northern Neck District will be held at Lancaster High School.
The day will begin with the girls and boys basketball teams from Colonial Beach playing against Washington & Lee. This will be one of several meetings between the two programs this season.
Then at 4 p.m., the girls teams from Rappahannock and Essex will face-off. Following that game the home team of Lancaster will host Northumberland with the girls game at 6 p.m. and boys at 8 p.m. The Rappahannock and Essex Boys will not play due to the extended play of the football team in Tappahannock.
Athletic Director Joanne Webb-Fary, of Lancaster High School, said there’s quite a bit of excitement for the event.
