The Rappahannock Raiders varsity basketball team faced the W&L Eagles twice in a week. Once in the final game of 2018 the GEBC then in their first game of 2019 on Friday, January 4. The teams traded the lead to start the game on Friday December 28, until the Raiders went ahead (11-7) with 2:17 left in the first period. They increased the advantage to ten (19-9) with one-minute left. A (0-9) run by the Eagles cut the lead to one (19-18) mid-way through the second period. The visiting Raiders pushed their lead back to six (26-20) with two-minutes to go before the half. They were up (30-23) at half time. The Raiders took a twelve-point lead (35-23) then seven-points (35-28) with 5:15 to play in the third period. The Eagles would trim the deficit to one-point (42-41) at the end of the third. Head Coach Jonas Ankrom said, “I think the players got a little frustrated with the foul calls and lost focus. We just had to settle down and take advantage of our size inside to put the game away.” They took a two-point lead (42-44) with 6:26 to play. The Raiders tied the game (46-46) with 4:50 to go in the game then took a (50-48) advantage with 4 minutes to go. They stretched the lead to five (54-49) at the 3:27 mark; they held onto the lead and won (60-53).
