The Rappahannock Raiders varsity baseball team played and beat the Mathews Blue Devils (6-1) on Tuesday, April 4. “We started hitting the ball to all fields that’s what we need to do to win” said Head Coach Jim Bieger. He (Coach Bieger) also said, “That’s a good team over there, and we had a freshman in his first varsity start that went six innings. We are still trying out a few things; we are searching for the best defensive team.” Starting pitcher Austin Vaughn said, “I found out I was starting when coach texted me and asked if I was ready for my first varsity start.” He (Austin) also said, “I slept pretty good, but as the game got closer I got a little nervous. I’m glad I went six innings. I think I lost my release point at times, but my fastball was working.” The Blue Devils were held to two hits. The Raiders gave up a run in the first and were down (0-1) in the fourth. Tyler West doubled off the left-center field fence to drive in a run and tie the score (1-1). With the bases loaded and two outs, Daniel Ritchie hit a shot up the first baseline that bounced off the first baseman’s glove, and resulted in 2 runs scoring to make it (3-1). “I was just trying to put the ball in play to move the runners” said Daniel Ritchie. Austin Vaughn struck out the batter in the top of the sixth with bases loaded to keep the score at (4-1). The Raiders had 4 doubles after the fourth inning, and seven players had one hit, and Jordan Hoover had 2 rbi’s. The Raiders will play Windsor and West Point on April 12 and 14.
