Raiders season ends in overtime

The Rappahannock Raiders basketball team traveled to Sussex High School to play the Surry Cougars in the Class 1 State semifinals on Tuesday, March 5. The Cougars were first on the scoreboard; the Raiders tied the game (2-2) with 6:28 left in the first period. The home team scored the next four points to be up (2-6) at the 5:01 mark of the first. The visitors closed within two points (6-8) then the Cougars went up (6-12) with 2:18 to go. The Raiders went on a (6-0) run to tie the game (12-12) at the end of the first quarter. They continued their run into the second period with seven more points to make it a (19-12) game with 5:11 to go in the second. A seven-point run by the Cougars tied the game (19-19) with 2:35 to play in the half. The Raiders made a run to end the half and be up by six (25-19). The home team made a (2-9) spurt to take a one-point lead (27-28) with 4:45 to play in the third period. The teams traded the lead over the next two-minutes before the Cougars took a three-point lead (29-32) then the Raiders went ahead (34-33) with 1:20 to go. A flurry of points in the last minute and the score was tied (36-36) with 36 seconds to go; the home team got four quick points to make it (36-40) at the end of the third. The visitors were down by five (41-46) at the 6:05 mark of the fourth. The deficit remained four points for the next three minutes, until the Raiders made it a two-point game (47-49). They tied the game (49-49) with 2:05 to play. A few defensive stops had the score still tied with 45 seconds left. Savion Epps pulled up for the left corner behind the three-point line and hit it to make the score (52-49) with 30 seconds to go in the game. The Cougars attempted a couple three-pointers that bounced off the rim but they got the rebound with 10 seconds left; another three-point shot and another rebound that was kicked out to the Cougars guard who hit the shot as the horn sounded to tie the game (52-52) and send it to overtime.
