The Rappahannock Raiders golf team hit the links on August 7 to start their 2018 season. The Raiders look to defend their Northern Neck district title that they have won the past two years. They traveled to Middlesex and played on the Piankatank Golf course against the Chargers. Because of the heat index the match was reduced from an eighteen to a nine-hole event, and the Raiders won by 49 strokes. Head Coach Paul Yackel said, “The team looked good; they had put in the hard work at practice to have a successful season. It was a warm humid day, so we played nine holes.” Nathan King had the low round with a 40, Reed Thorne and Sydney DeShazo shot a 41, while Courtney Walder had a 42 to total 164. The first Northern Neck district match was Wednesday, August 8; they played in an 18-hole match at Hobbs Hole versus Essex, Lancaster, and Northumberland. The Raiders were first with a score of 312; Essex recorded a 331, Northumberland 367, and Lancaster 431. Nathan King had the low round of 76 followed by Josh White 77, Reed Thorne 78, and Sydney DeShazo’s 81. Jokingly, Reed Thorne said, “I don’t like boring golf; it has to be challenging.” The Raiders went to the Golden Eagle golf course in Lancaster on Monday August 13 to play the second NN district match. Essex and Northumberland tied for first with a 350 total; the Raiders were third with 363, and Lancaster totaled 424. Sydney DeShazo and Reed Thorne shot 87, Matt Bronner 91, and Josh White 98. “It was a tough day; the fairways are tight and I lost a few balls in the trees”, said Josh White. The Raiders dropped their first regular season district match in three years. On Wednesday August 15 the Raiders had their first home match at Quinton Oaks golf course versus the Middlesex Chargers. They played 18-holes and the Raiders got back on the winning track with a 70-stroke victory. Reed Thorne and Nathan King recorded low rounds of 80, Josh White had an 84, and Sydney DeShazo 85 for a total of 329. The Raiders will play at King William on Monday, August 20, at home in a NN district match on Tuesday August 21, and Lancaster Thursday, August 23.
