The Rappahannock Raiders golf team hosted two matches at Quinton Oaks Golf Course on Tuesday, August 27 and Thursday, August 29. They played a nine-hole two team match against the Northumberland Indians on Tuesday.
It’s early in the season, so the Raiders are still working through the physical aspects of the game (walking a 3000 yard course while carrying their bag and clubs then slowing their heart rate to make a good swing to have the ball go where they want it). After they concur the physical toll, they must focus on the mental; the golfer must be mentally strong with a singular focus and have an incredible short-term memory loss. Some shots require a bit of creativity; you have to see the shot (do you want the ball to fly all the way to the hole or would you rather have it take a big bounce and roll) before you swing the club. Sydney DeShazo’s experience came to light this week; she recorded a low round of 38 two over par for nine holes. Josh White shot a 41 followed by Mac Bronner 46 and Lewis Ginn 47 to total 172. The Indians Patrick Lewis also shot a 38, Chase Fisher 39, Cory Palubinski 50, and Mathew Jett to total 173 a one-shot victory for the Raiders. They were on their home course again for the match versus the Middlesex Chargers on Thursday. Sydney DeShazo backed up her earlier round with another 38 to have the low round of the match. Josh White shot a 41, Lewis Ginn 43, and Hailey McKenny 47 to total 169. The Chargers Peyton Lambert shot a 43, Nicholas Daddario 45, Thomas Wilson 46, and Cole Stamm 50 for a 184 total.
Rappahannock will play Essex and King William on Thursday, September 5 at Quinton Oaks Golf Course.
