The Rappahannock Raiders varsity baseball team was home versus the 2016 1A State runner-up Windsor Dukes on Wednesday, April 12. The Dukes came into the game seeking revenge for the loss in the state finals. A non-conference regular season win doesn’t get you the rings from last year, even if you win both games of a double-header. The first game ended with Dukes winning (1-11). The Raiders couldn’t get their bats or gloves to work the way they wanted them to. The second game was closer an (8-9) loss with men left on base. The Raiders fell behind, but came back a few times; they were behind by four in the top of the seven and scored three runs to make it a one run game. A diving attempt by the Dukes center-fielder was called a catch, so the game ended with runners on base. Joseph Pierson had 2 hits, Tyler West crossed home plate twice, and Blake Jenkins had 2 rbis. Head Coach James Bieger expressed to his team the importance of transferring the skills learned on the practice field to the game.
The Raiders traveled to play the West Point Pointers on Friday, April 14. They doubled up the score on the Pointer in a (12-6) win. The Raiders scored in every inning except the second. They were behind after the first (1-3), after three runs in the third they were up (4-3). The bats stayed hot and the runs kept coming two in the fourth, one in the fifth, two in the sixth, and three in the seventh. The Raiders had 9 hits and 7 base on balls to get the 12 runs. The Raiders will play W&L and Essex this week April 18 and 20.
