Pitchers’ clutch efforts lead to district wins

In past weeks leading to the Northern Neck District Softball Tournament, it has been a time for teams to make clutch performances to vie for a championship title.

But it was the district’s top teams that proved to extend their dominance over their opponents.

In the only game to be played last Thursday as a result of nonplayable weather conditions for four high schools, Essex defeated the home team Colonial Beach 4-3 after nine innings.

Essex’s Kallie Carson picked up the win at the mound pitching nine innings, allowing nine hits, three runs, and six walks while striking out three.

Essex’s Emily Broache led the team with two hits and two RBIs after the game. Savannah Wood and Britney Owens each collected an RBI to along with their lone hits of the day. Katie Parr and Brionna Coleman followed each with a hit. Carson brought in two runs followed by Parr and Wood each with one.

Inscoe picked up the loss on the mound allowing six hits, a walk and four runs while striking out four.


Rappahannock 8, Essex 7

Rappahannock won their second meeting against Essex in a close 8-7 win. Carlie Clark and Hallie Berger shared time at the mound combining to allow five hits and seven runs.

Clark allowed three walks and struck out four, while Berger struck out four and a walk.

Rachel Berger had the only double for the Rappahannock Lady Raiders to going 2-3 from the plate and collecting three RBIs. Contributing single hitters included Brandi Mulvena with a run scored and an RBI; Hallie Berger with two runs scored and an RBI; McKenzie Hall and Kelsey Berhalter each with a run scored. Hannah Marks and Amanda Headley each scored a run and collected and RBI while Olivia Gaulding had a hit.

Essex’s Taylor Glass managed to hit a triple in the game to count for her only hit. The triple went along a run scored and a RBI for the second baseman.

Britney Jones followed with a double to go along with an RBI; Savannah Wood having a hit, an RBI and two runs scored; Kallie Carson with a hit, run scored and an RBI and Katie Parr with a hit. Kaitlin Saunders, Jamie Thompson and Brionna Coleman each scored a run; and Britney Owens collected an RBI.


Rappahannock 10, W&L 0

Rappahannock shut out Washington & Lee for the second time this season led by Hallie Berger allowing only one hit in the game and no runs.

Berger allowed only a walk in the game and recorded nine strikeouts. At the plate was 2-4.

Sister and teammate Rachel Berger followed going 2-3 from the plate scoring two runs and an RBI; McKenzie Hall was 2-2 with two runs and two RBIs; Carlie Clark was 1-2 with two runs and three RBIs and Summer Sanders was 1-1.
