“People heard several explosions while attending the Essex/Rappahannock football game at Essex High School and could see smoke coming from the pellet factory,” commented Tappahannock Essex Fire Department Chief Paul Richardson.
At 6 p.m. on Saturday, November 3, a fire broke out causing severe damage to the O’Malley Timber Products pellet company off Airport Road in Tappahannock.
Units from Essex, Richmond County, Westmoreland County, Callao, King and Queen, Middlesex, and Northumberland responded to the fire.
Essex County firefighters were on the scene within five minutes. There were no casualties reported. One Essex firefighter was transported to Riverside Tappahannock Hospital for smoke inhalation. Everything in the building was destroyed.
Officials believe the fire started in the pellet department and could have possibly been caused by a power strip or other electrical item. The investigation continues. Foul play or arson is not believed to be the cause at this time.
