The Richmond County Public Library at Rappahannock Community College’s Warsaw campus is happy to announce that Luca Birdsall, age 5, has become the third child at their library to complete the library’s 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program. Luca is the son of Matt and Amanda Birdsall of Hague. As the program requires, they wrote into their logbook each book that was read aloud to Luca or that he read himself. Luca’s favorite books are the “Curious George” series and his one thousandth book read was “Look Out Kindergarten, Here I Come”, which is the “graduation” book that the Dolly Parton Imagination Library sends participating children on their 5th birthday. In addition to his parents, Luca enjoyed reading with his grandparents, John and Brenda Metzler and Diana and David Birdsall.
The Richmond County Library became an affiliate of the national 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program in early 2017 and now has approximately 120 children participating locally. The program is designed to help parents and caregivers give their young children the confidence necessary to become strong readers and successful in school and life. Upon signing up at the Richmond County/RCC library, parents are given a book bag containing a keepsake hardbound logbook in which they can record the books they have read to their children or the child has read on their own.
Upon reaching milestones on their way, such as 100 Books Read, 200 Books Read, etc., each child’s photo is added to the library’s Children’s Room wall and (with parents’ permission) posted on the Richmond County Public Library Facebook page. Local merchants such as Michelle’s Sweet Treats, T&J’s Dairy Barn, the Thomas Store, the Handy Store, Northern Neck Burger, The Daily, and the Northern Neck Popcorn Bag have also donated small prizes for each 100 books read. To celebrate reaching the 1,000 Books read, Luca and his family will enjoy a free dessert at Relish Restaurant in Warsaw.

(hopefully) many children who will finish reading 1000 Books Before
Kindergarten at Richmond County Public Library.
