On August 6, 2019 (Tuesday) at approximately, 2:15 a.m., the Virginia State Police responded to a single vehicle crash involving a Richmond County Deputy being struck westbound Route 3, west of Route 642.
The trooper’s preliminary investigation reveals that the deputy was providing traffic control with his lights activated in a marked Dodge Charger for a wrecker loading another vehicle in the westbound lane of travel on Route 3. A Toyota Avalon driven by a female juvenile 17-years-of-age was traveling westbound on Route 3 and struck the deputy as he was standing on the left side of the wrecker.
The deputy was transported to the hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The female juvenile driver of the Toyota did not sustain injuries.
The juvenile was charged with; reckless driving, failure to yield right of way or reduce speed when approaching emergency vehicles (Move Over Law).
The crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Team.
