The RCEM Odyssey of the Mind team took first place in the Regional competition held at Louisa County High School on Saturday March 4th. Odyssey of the Mind is a creative competition that focuses on problem solving skills, team building, and creativity. During the competion students are assigned a short term spontaneous problem and select a long term problem in which they must provide a solution. The team coached by Sally Clements, with fourth graders, Kristen Dorsey, Anne Sterling Motley, Cain Edwards Max Failmezger and fifth graders James Mullenax, Joanna Martinez, and Angeles Dominguez were one of three Richmond County teams to compete at the regional level.
They competed and placed first in the problem: To Be Continued: A Superhero Cliffhanger, which required an eight minute performance about a superhero trying to stop a villain from stealing creativity. The plot also was required to have a sidekick, recycled item, special effect, battle scene and conclude with a cliffhanger. These seven creative thinkers based their plot on Wolfgang Mozart and his sister Mariana. Mariana was the nemesis character that was trying to steal creativity from the boys out of frustration that her talent was not recognized because she was a girl. She time travels trying to steal three items which included Mozarts latest composition, they key Benjamin Franklin used to discover electricity, and Edvard Munch’s “The Scream”. The finale of the performance included a Girls vs. Boys dance battle that ended in as a cliffhanger because the funny sidekick ended up wearing The Scream by Edvard Munch. These students will advance to the state competition on Saturday April 1, 2017 at John Champe High School in Northern Virginia.
