Obituaries, week of June 4: Straughan, Shaffer, Talley

Joy Chandler Straughan died on Memorial Day, May 26, 2014 in  Melbourne, FL where she recently moved with her husband of sixty-two  years, Howard R. Straughan.

Born in Hartford, AL in 1933, Joy married in 1952 and lived in  Birmingham, AL, Newport News, VA, Whiteville, NC and Miami, FL during  her husband’s banking career. In 1992 they retired to Kilmarnock, VA, where they lived until early this year.

Joy worked for the Federal Reserve Bank in Birmingham, until her first son was born. Thereafter, she was devoted to being a wonderful mother,  homemaker, golfer, bridge player, and friend to many. For many years she was a faithful Alter Guild member at Grace Episcopal Church in  Whiteville and after relocating, she became a member of Grace Episcopal  Church in Kilmarnock.

She is survived by her husband, Howard; her son, Randolph and his daughters, Anna and Samantha; her son, Samuel and his wife, Kathryn and their daughters, Nicole and Jacqueline; and her brother, Leonard  Chandler.

Services will be held at a later date in Heathsville, VA.

Allen “Al” Shaffer, 71, of Warsaw, passed away Thursday, May 22, 2014. He was a department supervisor for H. Warshow & Son, a 1961 graduate of Luray High School, and a member of Warsaw United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Shaffer; daughter, Carrie Dos Santos (Jack); sister, Frances Clement (Bill); brother-in-law, Don Woodward (Debbie); sister-in-laws, Patricia Barrier (Ray) and Pamela Johnson (Dennis); granddaughter, Rebecca Rose Dos Santos; nieces, Robin Johnson (Charlie) and Sherri Oliver; nephews, Brian Barrier (Jenny), James Johnson, Christopher Johnson (Rachel), and Robert Johnson; and great-nephews, Bill Johnson and Alistair and Ronan Barrier.

Funeral services were held at 11 am on Monday, May 26, 2014 at Warsaw United Methodist Church with interment following in the church cemetery. The Reverend Emily Moore and the Reverend Bill Amon officiated.  Memorial contribution may be made to Warsaw United Methodist Church Food Pantry, PO Box 291, Warsaw, VA 22572 or a charity of your choice.




Mildred Obier Talley, 83, of Village, VA passed away on Thursday, May 29, 2014.  She was a member of Victory Baptist Church, Warsaw, Va.

She was preceded in death by her husband, G. C. Talley Jr. and daughter, Betty Frances Talley.  Mildred is survived by her son, Wayne Talley and wife Brenda, two granddaughters, Christy T. Fulcher and husband Jeff, Shannon T. Davis and husband Keith, six great-grandsons, Ian Dorn, Logan Davis, Parks Dorn, Gavin Davis, Talan Davis and Cameron Fulcher all of Mechanicsville, Va.  She was also survived by a devoted niece, Claudia W. DeBose of Mechanicsville, Va. and devoted nephew, Allan Whittaker of Lancaster, Va.

The family received friends at Jones-Ash Funeral Home, Heathsville, Va. on Sunday, June 1, 2014 from 1 – 2 p.m. The funeral service followed at 2 p.m.  Burial was held at White Marsh Cemetery, Lancaster, VA.
