Obituaries, week of June 25: Middleton, Vanlandginham, Dillard, Brooke

Julia Courtney Middleton, 74, of Mundy Point passed away June 7, 2014. She was the widow of C. Wayne Middleton and the daughter of the late Lewis Walton Courtney and Julia Dunkley Courtney. Julia worked with her husband in their building construction business, operated a successful catering company and served as the President of Mundy Point and Watts Point Farms, Inc. Additionally, she volunteered her time for various organizations, including Woodland Academy and The Haven.

She is survived by her daughter, Courtney M. Jackson and her husband, Stephen R. Jackson; her granddaughter, Anne Courtney Jackson of Suffolk; her sister, Ann C. Lankford and her husband, Bill, of Atlanta; her brother, Lewis W. Courtney III and his wife, Catherine, of Mundy Point and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on June 28, 2014 at Henderson United Methodist Church in Callao. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Haven, P.O. Elizabeth Brann Vanlandingham, 83, of Callao, passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2014. She was the widow of James William Vanlandingham, a retired operator for GTE Telephone Company, and a member of Bethany Baptist Church, where she was the former head of the kitchen committee and the former leader of the Nannie Bland David Circle. She was also a member of the Callao Rescue Squad and of the Pioneers Telephone Company Organization.

Survivors are her three daughters, Carolyn V. Withers (Robert), Jean V. Brizendine (Sonny), and Brenda V. Marks (Billy); four sisters, Audrey Crowe, Irene Jones, Betty Pritchard, and Marie Smith; four grandchildren, Vicky Morris, Betsy Dzula, Robbie Withers, and Jennifer Gough; seven great-grandchildren, Kimberly and Katherine Morris, Ashlyn, Brayden and Naomi Gough, Sam and Will Dzula; and a special friend, Joyce Fitch, who she enjoyed going with to visit shut ins and residents of local nursing homes.

Funeral services were held Friday, June 20, 2014 at Bethany Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery. The Reverend Kori Kiss officiated. Pallbearers were Winston Jones, Charles Overstreet, William Hall, Paul Smith, Walt Dzula, David Morris, Larry Lewis, and Larry Brann. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bethany Building Fund, P.O. Box 641, Callao, VA 22435.




We regret the passing on June 17, 2014 of Margaret Ann Dillard of Hague, Virginia. There will be a memorial service on Saturday, June 28, at 1 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses located at 8972 Kings Highway, Montross. Ministers Lloyd Matthews, William Thompson and Arlden Lewis will officiate. The family wishes to express sincere appreciation for all the loving support during this most difficult time.




Jean Beauchamp Brooke, 78, of Callao, passed away on Friday, June 20, 2014. She retired from Philip Morris.

She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Sarah Jean Tate.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, W. Paul Brooke; her sons, Larry C. Brooke, and his wife, Rosemary, of King and Queen, and Chris C. Brooke of Mechanicsville; one daughter, Paulajean Tate, and her husband, Ross, of King William; sisters, Rebecca Beauchamp of Ashland, and Elsie Cornwell, of Callao; grandchildren, Seth B. Tate, and Desiree Brooke.

Services were June 24, 2014 from 1-2 p.m. at Jones-Ash Funeral Home, Heathsville, Virginia. A funeral service will follow at 2:00. Burial was held at Henderson United Methodist Church, Callao.
