Obituaries, week of June 12: Shackelford, Acheson, Burton, Fowler, Hudnall, Reynolds

John Gouldin Ross Shackelford

John Gouldin Ross Shackelford, 40, of Culpeper, formerly of Kinsale and Tappahannock passed away on Thursday, June 6, 2013.  Ross is survived by his father and stepmother, John W. and Gloria Shackelford of Culpeper; his mother and stepfather, Stephanie and Bobby Sanford; sister, Mildred Lee Sanford; nephew, J. B. Whitley; grandmother, Mildred Sanford all of Kinsale, his aunts, Melanie Marion of Glen Allen, Nora Beazley of Tappahannock, Lee Sanford of Kinsale and Mildred Self of Nomini Grove; and his uncle, C.M. “Hootie” Sanford Jr. of Kinsale. Funeral services were held Sunday, June 9, 2013 in Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Dunbrooke.  Interment followed in the church cemetery.  Pallbearers were James R. “Jimmy” Beazley, L.I.M. “Corey” Beazley, Lewis F. Marion Jr., Brian Dyke, Steve Weddle, H.G.C. “Buddy” Terry and Richard Dean. The family received friends Saturday at the Marks-Bristow Funeral Home, Tappahannock.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Tappahannock Volunteer Fire Department, P O Box 807 Tappahannock, VA 22560 or the Tappahannock-Essex Volunteer Rescue Squad, P O Box 583, Tappahannock, VA  22560.


Shirley Marie Acheson

Shirley Marie Acheson, 72, of Callao, passed away on Monday, June 3, 2013. She was employed at Walmart.

Survivors are her son, Robert W. Acheson, Jr., and Michele Acheson (wife of Robert Jr.) of Callao, two brothers, Eugene Keyton and Walter Keyton, Jr.; two sisters, Evelyn Springs and Ruby Harper; grandsons, Cody Acheson and Keith Acheson; granddaughters, Jennifer (Acheson) Hoskins, Natalie M. Acheson, and Rachel A. Acheson; great-grandson, JanDel Acheson; great-granddaughters, Alina Acheson, Raeden Hoskins, Rinna Hoskins, Rinsely Hoskins, Ryka Hoskins, and Roxxlynn Hoskins.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 8, 2013 at Welch Funeral Home, Marks Chapel. Interment was held Monday at Stonewall Memorial Gardens, Manassas, VA. The family received friends on Friday evening at the Welch Funeral Home.


Florence Tallent Burton

Florence Tallent Burton passed away on Wed. June 5, 2013 in Lynchburg.

Born in Warsaw on December 19, 1923, she was a daughter of the late George Edward Tallent and Geneva Bartlett. She was a retired nurse from Norfolk General Hospital, former member and officer of the Eastern Star Berkley Chapter; she loved to square dance and was a member of the Dixie Square Club and the Virginia Rounder’s and was also a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Nomini Grove.

She is survived by her sons, Gordon with his wife Betty and Earnest Burton; three sisters, Annie Dean Self, Nellie Mae Swann, Marie Conner and a brother, Robert Tallent; two granddaughters, Angel Yauchzee, Cherie Washburn and four great grandchildren.

A graveside funeral service was conducted June 8, 2013 in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Cemetery, Nomini Grove.

Joseph Wilson Fowler

Joseph Wilson Fowler, 73, of Haynesville, passed away on Friday, June 7, 2013. Mr. Fowler was a retired Carpenter/Cabinet Maker with Merchants Refrigeration in Richmond. He was preceded in death by his wife, Brenda W. Fowler and 11 of his brothers and sisters.

Survivors are three sons, Christopher W. Fowler (Joann) of Ashland, Robert Lee Taylor (Linda) and Robert Gene Clark, Jr. of Haynesville; his daughter, Juanita McInteer (James); his brother, Johnny Fowler of Ohio; his sisters, Jane Mantlo of Richmond and Phyllis Wittsel of Virginia Beach; a special brother-in-law, Jerry Withers. He is also survived by many beloved grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, 2013 at Totuskey Baptist Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services. Memorial contributions may be made to the Totuskey Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.


Elizabeth “Betsy” Higgins Hudnall

Elizabeth “Betsy” Higgins Hudnall, 86, of Mila, Va. passed away peacefully on June 7, 2013.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Snow “Yankee” Hudnall.

Mrs. Hudnall is survived by one sister, Nancy S. Higgins of Claiborne, Md.; four children, Chip Hudnall and his wife, Margaret, John Hudnall, Elizabeth H. Parker and her husband, Clifton L., and Robert S. Hudnall and his wife, Judy; two grandchildren, R. Derick Hudnall and Elizabeth S. Hudnall.

She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 14 at Mila United Methodist Church, followed by interment at the Mila Community Cemetery in Mila, Va.

The family will receive friends at Currie Funeral Home in Kilmarnock, Va. from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, 2013.

Delphine Elizabeth Reynolds

Delphine Elizabeth Reynolds, 79, of Heathsville passed away on Friday, June 7, 2013.  She was a member of Northern Neck Baptist Church, Callao. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Calvin Balderson and Alfred Reynolds. She is survived by her son, Kenneth Harper and wife Debbie of Heathsville; step-daughter, Rosa Mae Deardorff of Milford;  sister, Ilva Phillips; brother, Rev. Jimmy Reamy; two grandchildren, Christopher Harper and Melinda Oliff and great-granddaughter, Naia Ruiz. The family received friends June 9, 2013 at Jones-Ash Funeral Home, Rainswood. A funeral service was held at Jones-Ash Funeral Home, Rainswood on June 10. Burial  followed at Carmel United Methodist Church, Kinsale. Online remembrances may be made at
