Obituaries, week of Jan. 8: Beauchamp, Clarke, Freelander, Smith, Zaranski, Jewell, Pinon, Potter, Yerby

Helen Sanford Beauchamp, 98, of Warsaw, passed away on Friday, January 3, 2014. Mrs. Beauchamp was the widow of Wilton Irving Beauchamp and a member of Saint John’s Episcopal Church. After over 50 years of service, she retired from the Northern Neck News as a proof reader. Mrs. Beauchamp saw many changes during her life; one of the most memorable was attending the inauguration of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Survivors are her grandsons, Joshua Beauchamp (Katja) and Travis Beauchamp (Dimitry); her great-grandchildren, Nora, Wilton, and Eleanor and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Wilton Irving Beauchamp, Jr.; two brothers, Randolph Sanford and Goodwyn Sanford; and her sister, Gladys Sanford.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Monday, January 6, 2014 at St. John’s Episcopal Church with interment in the church cemetery. The Reverend Michael Malone officiated. Pallbearers were Curtis Packett, Marion James Packett, Tim Sanford, and Buster Sanford. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church.


Louis C. Clarke, 85, of Farnham, Virginia, passed away on December 31, 2013.
He was the owner and operator of L.C. Clarke and Sons Service Center, Farnham, Virginia. He also served in the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Alde W. Clarke; his sons, Louis Donnie Clarke, of Farnham, Virginia, John Douglas Clarke and his wife Kathy of Farnham, Virginia, one daughter, Bettie C. Musso and her husband Trevor of Montross, Virginia; three grandchildren, Gregory Gruner, Angelia Clarke, and Dougie Clarke; and two great grandchildren.
The family recieved friends on Friday, January 3, 2014 from 10-11 a.m. at Jones-Ash Funeral Home, Heathsville, Virginia. A funeral service followed at the funeral home. Burial was at Oakland United Methodist Church Cemetery, Farnham, Virginia.

Hannelore Friedlander, 77, of Lottsburg, Virginia, passed away on December 27, 2013. She retired from Fairfax County Public Schools as a Supervisor in Heating and Air. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Friedlander.
Services will be private.


Kathleen Peed Smith, 97, of Winston Salem, NC, widow of Robert Jenner Smith, passed away on December 29, 2013.  She was a secretary in the U. S. Congress, a member of the National Orchid Society and Ephesus Christian Church.   She is survived by her daughter, Nadine Smith Parker of Kinston, NC; grandchildren, Tracy Ann Baker of Burbank, CA and Kathleen E. Shoaf (Chad) of Lexington, NC and great-grandchildren, Trey Mayfield, Eric Mayfield, B. J. Mayfield, Brandon Mayfield, Allyson Smith, Wyatt Shoaf, Gracie Shoaf and William James Mayfield, and several great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 2, 2014 at Ephesus Christian Church, Foneswood with Rev. Mark Anderson officiating.

Frank Bernard “Lefty” Zaranski, 88, of Ellicott City, Maryland, formerly of Montross, passed away on Tuesday, December 31, 2013.  He was the widower of Mildred E. Zaranski, a member of St. Athanasius Catholic Church, retired from Western Maryland Railroad and a World War II Navy Veteran.
He is survived by his daughters, Deborah E. Grob of Baltimore, MD, and Donna J. Tokosh and husband Rich of Ellicott City, MD; six grandchildren, Laura Jarrett, Chris Johnson, Scott Grob, Mallory Grob, Chad Grob and Blaine Grob; and four great-grandchildren, Hunter Johnson, Hayden Johnson, Dylan Jarrett and Nicholas Jarrett.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at Welch Funeral Home, Montross Chapel with Pastor V. Wade Wilkins officiating.  Interment was in Historyland Memorial Park Cemetery, King George.  Pallbearers were Rick Tokosh, Chris Johnson, Mike Jarrett, Kevin Jenkins, Gene Jenkins and Scott Grob.

Nellie Mae Jewell, 83, of Callao, passed away Tuesday, December 24, 2013. She was cared for up until the end by her nephew, Billy Crabbe and wife, Linda, as well as caregiver, Henrietta Newsome. She was retired from Levi Strauss.
She is survived by her brother, Edward Headley; sisters, Marie Cooke, and Mary Williams as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Etta Headley; husband, James Jewell; brothers, Jimmy, Earl, Robert, and Louis Headley; and sisters, Lena Vanlandingham and Millissie Headley.
Funeral services were held Friday, December 27, 2013 at Welch Funeral Home, Marks Chapel. Interment followed at Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received friends Thursday, December 26, 2013 at Welch Funeral Home, Marks Chapel. Reverend Kori Kiss officiated. Pallbearers were Ernie Thrift, Glen Pinkard, George Cooke, Michael Clarke, Eddie Clarke, and Charles Cooke. Martin Monroy Pinon, 50, of Callao, passed away Friday, December 27, 2013. He was the owner/operator of Martin Pinon Roofing.
Survivors are his wife, Rosario Pinon; father, Luis Pinon; sons, Martin Pinon Jr., Martin Dario Pinon and Jaden Martin Pinon; step-daughters, Maria Del Rosario Rivera and Adriana Dayne Rivera; brothers, Raul, Javier, Fernando, Luis, Edgar and Timothy Monroy Pinon; sister, Jesus and Piedad Monroy Pinon; and step-grandson, Brayden Garcia Rivera.
Funeral services were held Sunday, December 29, 2013 at Welch Funeral Home-Marks Chapel with interment at Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery. Charles Marvin Potter, 54, of Warsaw, passed away Monday, December 23, 2013. He was the son of Warren and Gearline Potter and a foreman for WC Lowery.
In addition to his parents, he is survivedby his  wife, Donna S. Potter; son, Charles Russell Potter; daughters, Joann Cralle, Donelle Dodson and April Dodson; brothers, Dana and Stuart Potter; sister, Vivian Moore; and four grandchildren, Jay, Brittany, Destiny and Avery.
The family received friends Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at Welch Funeral Home-Marks Chapel, with interment at Jerusalem Baptist Church Cemetery.


Frances Elizabeth Ball Yerby died December 16, 2013. She was born August 6, 1929 in Richmond County to Martha and Emery (stepfather) Veney.
Educated in Richmond County Schools, she was a member of the Eastern Star and faithfully served Lyells Chapel Baptist Church. She was predeceased by her parents and her husbands, George Andrew Ball and Vernon Rudolph Yerby.
Surviving are her children, Helen Sayles, George A. Ball Jr, Deborah J. Ball, Vernon A. Yerby and Gerry S. Yerby; grandson, Rev. Jeffery R. Ball (Sherry); sister, Lucy Jane Brown; 11 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
Services were held December 21 at Lyells Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. James Johnson, Eulogist and Reverends James Ashton, Gerald Smith and Raymond Lucas. Pallbearers were Keith Jones, Germaine Yerby, Devontre Yerby, Corey Yerby, Michael Yerby and Derrick Yerby. Arrangements by Lee Funeral Home, Warsaw.
