Ruth Ellen Edwards Hurley, affectionately “RE”, 48, died Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at her home in Urbanna. She is survived by her husband Walter Boyd “Walt” Hurley, Jr. two daughters, Rachel Virginia and Sarah Grace and one son, Walter Boyd III “Trip”. Parents Rachel Packett and W.D. Edwards Jr., of Saluda, and two brothers William D. (Jennifer) Edwards III, of Warner, and James R. (Rebecca) Edwards, of Saluda. One niece, Kaitlin, and five nephews, Michael, Marshall, Randy, Andy, and Quincy Edwards. One grandniece Sadie Vance Edwards. Sister-in-law Donna Hurley (Dennis) Williams. Best Friend Susan Ray Silver and Granddaddy Charles and Bitsy Bristow.
Ruth Ellen graduated from Chesapeake Academy in 1979, from York Academy in 1983, and from Lynchburg College in 1987 with a BA in Elementary Education and taught special needs children in the Middlesex County School System. She was presented at the 89th Holly Ball, was a member of the Garden Club of Virginia (Middle Peninsula), and served on the Board of Trustees of Ware Academy. Ruth Ellen was also an inspired visionary and integral part of the family business.
She will always be remembered for her passion for gardening and love of friends, the beach, the river, and her dogs Rudy, Willie, Sam, and Lilly Belle, and most importantly her unparalleled love and dedication to her family. She was an inspiration to so many and revered for her grace, courage, and wisdom.
A celebration of her life was held Friday, January 31st at Saluda Baptist Church.

Robert Paul Butler, 55, of Montross, passed away February 4, 2014. He was a truck driver for Safeway and a member of Colonial Beach Moose Lodge.
He is survived by his wife, Mary V. Butler of West River, MD; mother, Mary R. Butler of Callao; daughters, Tracie E. Butler of Prince Frederick, MD and Stacie L. Butler of Huntingtown, MD; sisters, Joan Ellen Potter, Hanover, PA and Wanda Jean Tyrrell of Chesapeake Beach, MD; brothers, Clyde M. “Tad” Butler, Jr. Shady Side, MD and Richard Thomas “Tom” Butler of Jessup, MD and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at Popes Creek Baptist Church with Reverend Richard Headley officiating.

Farley Ames Whitley, 86, of Tappahannock, passed away Thursday, February 6, 2014. Mrs. Whitely was the daughter of Henry Peck Ames and Clara Moore Ames of Arlington, VA. Farley met and married Colonel Arthur Whitley in West Point. They were married for 10 years. She moved to Vermont then later moved to New Hampshire, where she restored a 200 year old home and converted it to a bed & breakfast. While in New Hampshire, she was an active member in the Chamber of Commerce. She was an accomplished pianist, loved to garden, and was a resourceful person in many ways. Mrs. Whitley had a stroke Christmas of 1995 and had lived in Virginia ever since. She was the mother of four children, having been preceded in death by a daughter.
She is survived by her son, Franklin L. “Bo” Whitley of Tappahannock; two daughters, Kathleen V. Hines of Las Vegas and Gene Ann Whitley of Hampton; brother, Henry Peck Ames, Jr. of San Francisco and sister, Ann Calhoun Groves Gurman of McLean.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 13, 2014 at St. James Episcopal Church in Montross.
Anna Faye Mitchell, 68, of Kinsale, passed away Thursday, February 6, 2014. She was the widow of Bernard Mitchell and a homemaker.
Survivors are her two sons, Joseph Lanham and Jonathan Adams; two daughters, Lynn Corbett and Connie Moore; sister, Roberta Jean Walsh; nephew, Robert Cantrell (Birdie), and four grandchildren.

Howard Deatley Clarke, 61, of Callao, passed away Thursday, February 6, 2014. He was a retired security officer for Northern Neck Security and an Air Force veteran having served from1972 to 1978.
Survivors are his son, Jonathan M. Clarke of Lottsburg; his daughter, Amy M. Clarke of Las Vegas, NV; two sisters, Katherine C. Vanlandingham (Robert) of Callao and Margaret A. Geron (Adam) of West Point; a grandson, Justin M. Clarke and a future grandson due in March.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 8, 2014 at Welch Funeral Home, Marks Chapel with interment in Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery. The Reverend Randy Newsome and the Reverend Jimmy Reamy officiated. Pallbearers were John Newsome, Billy Newsome, Billy Marks, Bobby Nash, Mitchell Jett, Bobby Wilkins, Ennis King, and Paul Vanlandingham.
