Northumberland now has bragging rights in the Northern Neck after putting on a show in the district tournament this past Friday. With some dramatic finishes to the regular season and in the district tournament, the boys and girls teams are now crowned the 2013 Northern Neck District tournament champions.
On Feb. 15 in the girls’ finals at Lancaster High School, top seeded Lancaster (8-2, 20-5 L1) was defeated by second seeded Northumberland (8-2, 19-4 W2) 45-42; then in the boys’ finals game, third seeded Essex (5-5, 6-11 L1) fell to fourth seeded Northumberland (4-6, 13-11 W2) 50-49.
Earlier in the tournament, the Lancaster girls’ team settled a season ending tiebreaker with Northumberland to earn the top seed following a 57-46 win on Feb. 11.
The next day, second seeded the Northumberland girls defeated third seeded Colonial Beach (7-3, 15-8 L2) 45-39. Then in second game of the evening, fourth-seeded Essex (4-6, 9-11 L1) fell to top seeded Lancaster, 56-60.
In the boys semifinals, Essex defeated second seeded Lancaster (8-2, 17-4 L1) 50-45 on Feb. 13. Both teams met last year in the tournament with Lancaster winning out in the finals. Following the first game, regular season champion and top seeded Colonial Beach (9-1, 16-7 L1) fell to Northumberland 67-48.
Division 1 and 2 region basketball tournaments will begin the following week. Pairings are expected to be set Feb. 17
