Eagles take second loss to close out season
By Nathaniel Cline

Washington and Lee's (8-2) road to the Virginia High School League's Region A State Football Championship was diverted as the Cavaliers (7-2) of King William overcame an Eagles' rally wining 27 - 20.

On November 20, the Eagles traveled to King William yet again after losing earlier in the season to the Cavaliers, 28 - 14.

The Eagles offense took a blow early in the game as junior Quarterback Bryan Burrell left the game with his arm in a sling and ice on his collarbone.

Burrell ran for 62 yards on four carries and completed two of four passes before leaving the game.

The game was left in the hands of outgoing senior running back Jamar Tate to lead the team on offense.

Tate ran for a total of 82 yards on 16 carries, threw for 87 yards, completing seven of 19 passes and scored on a 49-yard touchdown.

Also helping the Eagles was senior wide receiver D.J. Brooks who had one carry for nine yards, caught seven passes for 90 yards and scored on once.

The Eagles finished the game with 248 total yards on offense from five players.

But the Eagles defense couldn't contain the Cavalier's offensive weapons including junior quarterback Lewis Redman.

Redman threw for 229 yards and led the Cavaliers to a total of 357 yards from seven additional players.

However, late in the game, the Eagles defense was able to go back to its "bread and butter" by creating turnovers. Brooks helped force a fumble lost by Redman, which led to senior linebacker Bubby Miles' score on a 27-yard touchdown.

In the fourth quarter, with no timeouts remaining and the clock ticking down, Washington and Lee Head Coach Malcolm Lewis spoke with his players one last time.

Lewis said he was proud of his players' come-back from the 13-0 score after the first quarter, which led to the Eagles first lead of the game, 14 - 13.

"It was a really fantastic three quarters after we were knocked on our heels like we were in the first quarter," Lewis said about how his players handled the end of the game. "I was very proud of them."
