From the back of their Reedville home, Bob Wilson gently lifts a frame covered in honeybees as his wife Bonnie stands nearby, in a protective suit.

Sparingly using a smoker, Bonnie helps to calm the bees while her husband checks the hive and inserts a jar of sugar water to supplement their diets.

"The reason the smoke works is that they instinctively think there might be a forest fire and they go into the comb itself and gorge themselves on honey. Then they are just too lethargic to move," said Bonnie.
