The Hunter Holmes McGuire V.A. Medical Center in Richmond, in correlation with the Department of Veteran Affairs is planning to move ahead with their program of using experiments on dogs as part of the V.A.’s medical research program. The controversial procedure, which is considered invasive and ultimately fatal, entails medical experiments on dogs as part of the V.A.’s medical research program.
The V.A. claims the studies could produce discoveries that may help veterans suffering from spinal cord injuries or breathing problems.
At McGuire V.A. Hospital, experiments include implanting pace makers in dogs, then inducing abnormal heart rhythms and running the animals on treadmills to test cardiac function before euthanizing them by injection or draining their blood.
