On Wednesday, January 1, 2020 at approximately 6:19 p.m., the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from state police to execute an arrest warrant on Derrick A. Elseth Jr., 24, of Warsaw, at a residence in the 1000 block of Finchs Hill Road.
Two Richmond County Deputies and a Virginia State Police Trooper arrived at the location and were granted entrance into the residence by another adult. Upon entry, it was determined that Elseth was hiding in the basement of the residence. Upon entering the basement, the trooper and deputies encountered Elseth armed with a handgun. During the course of the encounter, Elseth was shot.
Fire and Rescue were immediately notified and responded. Elseth succumbed to his injuries and died at the scene. His remains were transported to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Richmond for examination and autopsy.
In accordance with the Virginia State Police policy, the trooper involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.
No law enforcement was injured during the incident.
The incident remains under investigation by the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Culpeper Field Office.
