Local roads still affected by Tropical Storm Michael

Emergency crews with VDOT are still making long-term repair work throughout the Northern Neck, which sustained severe damage during Tropical Storm Michael.

According to VDOT’s Fredericksburg Office, more that 100 state-maintained roads have re-opened in VDOT’s Fredericksburg District which includes the Northern Neck.

There are still three roads in Northumberland County, two roads in Westmoreland and one road in Lancaster County that require extensive work before they can accept traffic.

In Northumberland County, Courthouse Road (Rt. 201) is anticipated to re-open in June of this year. It was originally scheduled to re-open by the end of February but the damage was much more extensive than previously thought. Crews are replacing a damaged set of four 96-inch drainage pipes with a triple set of concrete boxes culverts, with each culvert measuring 12 feet by 10 feet.

According to VDOT Communications Manager Kelly Hannon, the replacement culverts are larger than previously estimated, which has resulted in a longer fabrication period. The culverts must be fabricated to specific dimensions, which delays the repair schedule.

Spring Road (Rt. 634), has a scheduled re-opening date of August 2019. Crews are repairing the bridge and replacing a washed out section of the road.
