In her first game against Northumberland, ZeNya Butler was the games leading scorer with 23 points in the 63-61.

As hard as they fight, the Essex Lady Trojans continued last week to be on the short end of the winning stick. In their district openers, the improved basketball team dropped their games to Colonial Beach, Northumberland and Lancaster.

Last Thursday, the much improved Essex Lady Trojans descended on Northumberland’s home gym only to come away with a 63-61 loss. After a before game recognition of Nia Jones 1,000 points, they set out to spoil the evening and came very close to doing just that.

Leading by a 32-24 halftime advantage, the two teams went to the locker rooms to make adjustments.

Northumberland’s man-to-man defensive strategy worked with the Indians outscoring the Trojans 19-14 in the third quarter and 20-15 in the last to get the win.

ZeNya Butler was the games leading scorer with 23 points, Vicky Boone and Dionshe’ Nelson had 10 each, Audasia Kelly eight, Jaelah Rose and Kiara Williams three each and Alyssa Brooks two.

In the Colonial Beach 62-52 win on Jan. 9, Karley Inscoe led the team with 26 points including seven three-pointers, six in the first half. Caneishia Fulcher followed in scoring with 16, Billie Gould with eight, Deniya Newman with four, McKenzie Conway and Emily Parks with three each, and Megan Seaman with two.

Kelly dropped 14 points to lead her team followed by Butler adding 10. Nelson chipped in with eight points along with Boone and Rivers with seven each, Khaylah Brent with four and Williams with two.

The results of the Lancaster 53-49 loss to Lancaster was not available prior to press time.
