Lady Raiders walk-off

Meredith Slaw, Savannah Goodman, and Courtney Berhalter all homered.

The Rappahannock Lady Raiders varsity softball team hosted and defeated the Mathews Lady Blue Devils with a walk-off 2 run homer in the bottom of the seventh on Tuesday, April 4. Everyone that has played a sport dreams of scoring the winning touchdown, goal, basket, or point, or making the big stop to prevent a basket, goal, or point. Courtney Berhalter had her dream come true on Tuesday; with her team, down by one run with a runner on first she powered the ball over the left-field fence for a walk-off homer and a (7-6) victory. “I just cleared my mind, and let my bat do whatever it was going to do” said Courtney Berhalter. The Lady Blue Devils were ahead (0-5) in the third inning. Meredith Slaw with one of her three hits blasted a homerun over the right-field fence to put her team on the scoreboard. “I just focus on one pitch at a time, and try to get a hit every time I’m at bat” said Meredith Slaw. Caroline Davenport singled in the fourth, and was driven in by Sarina Darby’s double. The next batter Savannah Goodman left the yard to add two more runs to make the score (4-5). Both teams scored in the sixth to make it (5-6). Coach Ellen Gaines said “The team knows they can hit the ball; it’s just a matter of them executing, they are very confident and focused. We just hit the ball. Our defense was more of an issue in the beginning of the game.” The Lady Raiders will be on spring break this week.
