The Rappahannock Lady Raiders varsity basketball team hosted the West Point Lady Pointers on Friday, December 6. Good defense and not being able to get the ball to go in the basket made for a long first period; the Lady Pointers were first on the scoreboard with a free throw (0-1) with 2:49 to go in the first. What should you do when your shots aren’t falling? “If you are off keep shooting until you get on, you can’t stop shooting because you aren’t making it” explained Head Coach Ellen Gaines. The Lady Raiders were shooting but nothing was falling, and they were down (0-1) at the end of the first. The trend continued into the second quarter and the home team was behind (0-9) at half time. Head Coach Ellen Gaines stated, “We were missing easy shots and we had to keep going.” The Lady Raiders broke the ice on a short jumper by Candace Slaw to make the score (2-14) with 4:54 to go in the third period. Natasia Fauntleroy added a layup to make it (4-17) at the end of the third. Rappahannock applied pressure in the second half especially in the fourth quarter and forced a lot of turnovers that resulted in points on the offensive end. The Lady Raiders began to walk down the Lady Pointers in the fourth period; a seven point run made it (11-17) at the 5:42 mark, another seven point run made it (18-19) with 4:11 to play, and they tied the game (21-21) one minute late. They took their first lead (26-25) at the 1:34 mark and six points later it was (32-25) with 1 minute to go in the game. The Lady Raiders used the big fourth quarter to get a (34-27) victory. Head Coach Ellen Gaines said, “Your offense has to come from your defense. We still have somethings to work on.” Demeriah Holmes had 13 points, 2 rebounds, 3 steals, Candace Slaw 7pts, 6rebs, 5stls, Dayona Jackson 5pts, 1stl, Jasmine Kelly 4pts, 6rebs, 6stls, Brianna Rich 3pts, 7rebs, Natasia Fauntleroy 2pts, 3rebs, 1blk.
