Lady Raiders thrash the Lady Eagles

The Rappahannock Lady Raiders varsity basketball team hosted the W&L Lady Eagles in the GEBC Classic on Friday, December 27. The Lady Raiders were behind (0-3) early then they took a (5-3) lead with 4:42 to play in the first period. A seven-point run put them up (7-3) with another three-pointer the Lady Eagles pulled within one point (7-6) with 2:39 left in the first. After five quick points, the visitors were ahead (7-8) at the 1:28 mark of the first quarter. Four more points by the home team gave them the an (11-8) advantage at the end of the first. Rappahannock pushed their lead to (14-8) with 6:02 to play in the second period. The Lady Raiders defense held the Lady Eagles to two points in the five minutes that ran off the clock in to be up by eight (18-10) with 3:15 to play in the first half. The lead went from eight to six then the home team ended the half up by ten (23-13). Reagan White came off the bench to score six points in the half. She (Reagan White) said, “I’m finally knocking the rust from not playing team basketball for a couple of years. My defense was there I just had to get my shot to go in.” Out of the half time break, the Lady Eagles scored the first four points to make it a (23-17) game with 5:26 to play in the third period. The home team responded to go back up by ten (27-17) then eleven (30-19) with 3:06 to go. Neither team could find their shooting stroke in the last three minutes, so the score stayed the same (30-19) after three quarters. Rappahannock made it a thirteen-point game (34-21) with 5:45 to play in the fourth stanza. It was a seventeen-point lead (38-21) with 4:17 to go. The lead hoovered around fifteen to eighteen points for the remainder of the game and the Lady Raiders won (42-28). Freshman point guard Nakiya West said, “I just saw an opening, so I drove to the basket and my shots started to fall. Then I was hitting my free throws; this was my best game. I’ll try to build on this.” Nakiya West had 10 points, Candace Slaw 10pts, Natasia Fauntleroy 6pts, Regan White 6pts, Brianna Rich 4pts, Dayona Jackson, Jasmine Kelly, and Demeriah Holmes 2pts.
