The Rappahannock Lady Raiders varsity basketball team were home against the West Point Lady Pointers on Wednesday December, 12. The Lady Raiders controlled the game and won (51-43) behind a second period rally. They were first on the scoreboard (3-0) and held a one-point lead (11-10) at the end of the first period. The Lady Raiders went ahead by five points (20-15) with 4:27 left in the second quarter; their advantage increased to six points (28-22) by half time. They used a combination of inside play and selective outside shooting. There were some nice passes to the low block that didn’t result in points, even though the recipient made a good drop step, shot fake, or show and go the ball just didn’t find the net. The home team went ahead by eight early in the third period (30-22) and were up by double-digits (39-27) with 1:32 to go. When the horn sounded to end the first twenty-four minutes, the Lady Raiders held a seven-point lead (39-32). The rally in the fourth quarter gave them their biggest lead of the game (47-33) with 5:22 to play. The visitors cut into the lead to make it single-digits (49-41) with 1:38 to go in the game. A few defensive stops kept the Lady Raiders ahead to get the eight-point victory. The Lady Raiders showed progress by cutting down on turnovers, limiting second chance opportunities, and improved free-throw shooting.
