The Rappahannock Lady Raiders varsity basketball team began their 2018 season with two blowout wins over the King and Queen Central Lady Tigers and the Charles City Lady Panthers. The ball went up for the first game on Tuesday November 27 against the Lady Tigers. The Lady Raiders scored first (4-0) then increased their advantage as the clock ticked down, by the end of the first period they were ahead (18-10). The defense controlled the second period and held the visitors scoreless to make it (33-8) at the half. The home team continued to pour in buckets and held the Lady Tigers to three points to be up (49-11) after three periods. The defense and a continuous clock in the fourth put an end to the game with a (54-11) Lady Raiders win. Head Coach Ellen Gaines said, “We hustled well, yet we have a lot of work to do. Our 1-3-1 defense wasn’t good, so I switched back to the 2-3. We’re in the early stages; it was a good win. With five returning players and the players that moved up from JV, we’ll continue to work.” In the game versus the Lady Panthers on Wednesday, November 28, the Lady Raiders offense took a big lead (22-5) in the first period. They piled on the points in the second to be up (39-8) at the half. After three periods the blowout was almost complete with a (50-14) lead. The fourth stanza was continuous clock and another Lady Raiders win (65-18). In the two games, Savannah Goodman had 24 points, 14 assist, 5 steals, Rilee Baughan 24pts, 16 rebounds, Natasia Fauntleroy 22pts, 11rebs, Dayona Jackson 18pts, 7ast, 7stls, Jasmine Kelly 14pts, 6rebs, 5stls, Maddie Baughan 8pts, 10rebs, 6ast, Demeriah Holmes 6pts, 2ast, 1stl, Kayla Packett 2pts, 9rebs, Eaden Sill 2pts, 4rebs. Rappahannock will have three games this week against West Point, Mathews, and Mountain View on December 3, 5, and 7.
