For the first 12 minutes of Monday night’s game at Tappahannock it was a display of opposites. The home standing and homecoming Trojans from Essex showed off for an adoring crowd, scoring five
For the visiting Northumbeland Indians it was a display of frustration.
Essex got touchdowns from Leo Gaskins on a one-yard run, Sterling Hammond on a 62 yard punt return, C.J. Jones on a 39-yard pass from Dominek Broaddus, and Trey Jones on a 37-yard pass from
Broaddus. Robert Umphlette added the five extra points.
In the second period the Trojans tacked on two more scores as the Indians’ defense began to come around. Broaddus connected on 12-yard pass to L.J. Johnson and Trey Jones scored on a 29-yard run. None of these scores came on long drives as most of them started in Indians’ territory.
Th two teams played more evenly in the second half with Essex scoring once more in the third quarter on a Gaskins 45-yard run.
From that point on the Essex coaching staff substituted freely. Northumberland managed one drive in the final period of play, but ran out of time before they could score.
The Indians offense was absent Monday night for the most part.
Tevin Carter led the rushing attack with 23 yards in seven carries. Daryl Smith picked up 16 yards on eight tries, Tyler Costley eight yards in one attempt. DaQuan Blue completed two of four passes minus one yard. Zak Kent completed two of seven from minus nine yards. Both passers had one pass intercepted.
