The VHSL 1A State Golf Tournament was held on Monday, October 8, at Lonesome Pine Country Club. The Essex Trojans golf team finished fourth overall and the Rappahannock Raiders came in fifth on the eighteen-hole par 71 course. “The course was relatively short (5679 yards) with tight fairways and sloping hills” said Head Coach Paul Yackel. The Trojans Montaevious White tied for tenth with an 82, Logan Cooke tied for twelfth 83, Hunter Shackelford tied for eighteenth 86, and Tristan Gross tied for forty-third for a total of 351. The Raiders Reed Thorne completed his round with a 78 tied for fifth, Josh White was seventeenth with an 85, Sydney DeShazo tied for thirty-second with a 93, and Courtney Walder tied for thirty-ninth with a 97 for a total of 353. Other NND golfers were Northumberland’s Patrick Lewis tied for twenty-fifth with an 89, Rappahannock’s Nathan King 99 finished forty-second, Essex Cliff Whitlock tied for forty-third with 100, Jalen Davenport fifty-third with 105, and Rappahannock’s Bryce Self tied for fifty-fourth with a 106. Sydney DeShazo stated, “The country club and course was nice, but the hills made it difficult to shoot low scores. The tees were on flat ground, but the fairway had a lot of hills, so your second shot would be above or below your feet.” Congratulations to all the coaches and golfers on well played season. Drive, chip, and putt on to the next hole.
