Drivers using the Downing Bridge to travel between Richmond County and Tappahannock can expect to continue seeing delays at night through Friday, June 28.
Monday, Virginia Department of Transportation started closing one lane overnight between the hours of 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. Automated flagging devices are directing alternating flows of traffic through the work zone.
The lane-closure is required for a routine inspection to assess the bridge’s overall condition. The work started in April but was postponed to this month to prevent conflicts with the nesting season for Peregrine falcons. This week’s work is expected to complete the process.
