District finalists prepare for title matches

Several spring sports teams will vie for an opportunity to be crowned district tournament champions. This comes after teams wrapped up their respective regular seasons on May 17.


Baseball & Softball

A long day at Dream Fields in Lancaster begin with the district softball tournament opening the semifinals.

Beginning May 21 and continuing May 23, the Northern Neck District top four finishing varsity softball and baseball teams began their quest vying for a chance to be tournament champions. In doing so, they could help their chances or improve their chances at earning a playoff bid in the Region A Playoffs.

In softball, top seeded Rappahannock defeated fourth seeded Lancaster, 8-0, followed by second seeded Essex dropping  third seeded Northumberland 4-2 .

The Rappahannock Baseball Team earned the top seed in the district tournament came back down 2-0 to win 7-2 over fourth seeded Northumberland. In the nightcap, second seeded Essex fell to third seeded Lancaster 6-1 followed by a no hitter from Colton Haydon.

The winning teams will play on the rescheduled date of May 24 in the district tournament finals at Dream Fields. The softball tournament finals will begin at 5:30 p.m., with baseball following at 7:30 p.m.

 Admission fee is $7.


Boys & Girls Soccer

The defending Washington & Lee Boys Soccer Team earned the top seed in the district tournament began on May 22 at Essex High School. Fourth seeded Lancaster was dropped by W&L, 8-1, in game one. A sudden death overtime followed in game two with second seeded Essex defeating third seeded Rappahannock 2-1.

The girls’ tournament semifinals opened at A.T. Johnson in Westmoreland County on May 21. Top seeded Northumberland shut out fourth seeded Lancaster in game one, 5-0. Then in game two, third seeded Washington & Lee defeated second seeded Essex, 2-1.

The winners of both tournaments will advance to the district tournament finals on May 24 at Essex High School. Game time is a 6 p.m. between the girls teams from W&L and Norrthumberland, then the boys teams from W&L and Essex to follow at 8 p.m.


Outdoor Track

The Northern Neck District Track Teams will take their act on the road to West Point High School for the Region A Championships rescheduled to May 24 beginning at 12:30 p.m. The Northumberland Boys and Lancaster Girls Track Teams were crowned district champions followed by their coaches of the year, Eddie Barnes Jr. (Northumberland) and Joanne Webb Fary (Lancaster).

Those that qualify from the region championships will advance to the Group A Outdoor Track Championships at Radford University on June 1.


Girls & Boys Tennis

The Rappahannock Boys and Girls Tennis Teams finished their regular seasons and await pairings for the Region A Tennis Tournament in Suffolk May 29-30 at the Howard Mast Tennis Complex. The boys team finished undefeated with a record of 7-0 and the girls with a record of 7-1.


Editor’s note: At the end of the season, three baseball teams including Northumberland, Essex and Lancaster were tied with records of 6-4. Teams were seeded following picks drawn by schools at the beginning of the year.
