Commemorating 50 years of healing and serving the community

On a bright, beautiful Saturday in Tappahannock, local residents, civic groups and officials from all levels of government came out celebrate two major milestones for Riverside Tappahannock Hospital.
This year marks the hospital’s 50th anniversary of serving the community as well as the 25th anniversary of its partnership with Riverside Health System (RHS).
Elizabeth Martin, Riverside Health System’s Vice President for Quality who for many years served as administrator of RTH, said that being part of the hospital’s legacy was “one of the things I’m proudest of when I look back on anything I’ve accomplished in life.”
“The people here are the most committed I’ve ever met in my life to a true mission,” said Martin. “I’m proud of the medical staff that we’ve put together. We’ve gotten really strong physicians who come here. This was a destination for them. It wasn’t like they happened upon it and [said] ‘Oh, I’ll just practice here for a while.’ They were looking for communities like this and really had great training and skills.”
John Peterman, who has been with RHS for over 25 years and joined the hospital as its administrator in October, praised the family-like camaraderie among its staff.
“Here, everybody just pitches in,” said Peterman. “If you want to see teamwork, come to a small hospital … because people feel responsible for each other.”
Speakers recognized not only the work of the staff throughout the hospital, but also Riverside’s reach throughout the Northern Neck with physicians and organizations based in areas including Warsaw and Callao.
